ABOUT THE CAFÉ
Brian called Dave one cold night during the winter of 1994 and said, “Dave, do you want to open up a business?” I asked, “What kind of business?” He said, “Coffee roasting.” I said, “Yes, sir.” Dave had wanted to roast coffee for many years, ever since he discovered a man roasting specialty grade coffees – like Celebes Kalossi and Guatemala Coban – in a tiny ‘micro-roastery’ on Duke Street in Alexandria, Virginia.
Brian and Dave searched for a long time to find a location they thought would work for their concept of a coffee roasting/retailing business and eventually settled on 313 High Street in a small space they still lease from Jim Travis and Pete Kroemer, principals of Sasco Insurance. Brian obtained training from several master roasters at both small and large coffee roasting concerns, including the company who manufactured the roasting machine we eventually chose – the Diedrich IR 12. This is the drum roaster in which Brian has roasted hundreds of thousands of pounds of coffee over the years, Brian Greene’s skills have grown over the years; he is not only our Roastmaster, but he deftly handles the job of Chief Operations Officer – which covers lots of territory, it’s a list that doesn’t end.
The aroma of freshly roasted – or roasting – coffee provides one of life’s great and memorable sensory perceptions.
We operate two full cafés, in Sparta and Hackettstown, as well as a kiosk at the Taylor Memorial Library at Centenary University in Hackettstown.
In all of our locations, we work to create a comfortable, home-like atmosphere where you can relax, drink, and think. Whether you want to enjoy a cup of fresh-roasted coffee or tea in our café, or grab a quick cup to go, we make it our mission to meet your needs.
PREMIUM COFFEE, GOOD FOOD, GREAT SERVICE.
We serve freshly-brewed premium leaf teas and other tea-based beverages (hot or iced); hot cocoa; drip-brewed coffee and espresso-based drinks (cappuccino, latte, macchiato, mocha, ‘Americano’ etc.); ‘cold-brew’ coffee; nitrogen infused ‘cold brew’, and more!
We adjust our menu continuously to meet the changing desires and needs of our customers. In addition to our roasted coffee “beans” for home use, we offer a broad selection of premium grade loose leaf teas (Camellia sinensis) as well as several herbal, botanical, and dried fruit tea blends.
To complement our beverages, we offer fresh pastries; chocolate; mararons; cookies; quiche; ‘light lunch’, etc.
We pride ourselves on offering ‘all things coffee and tea’ in our ‘retail’ area, including accessories like French presses; various types of coffee grinders; interesting and well-made ceramic, porcelain, stoneware, and bone china mugs and cups; various types of tea pots, gift bags and baskets – even some products with a sense of humor like our selection from the Brooklyn -based ‘Philosopher’s Guild’.
Please let us help you find a special gift for any occasion.
